I’ve been reading this Chinese novel called 《阵问长生》 (Immortality Through Array Formations) and figured it deserves a bit more attention. It’s one of the few xianxia that actually goes deep into array formations instead of just name-dropping them for aesthetics.

✦ What’s the hook?
The MC, Mo Hua, doesn’t fight with a sword or fists (He does but very later on). He kills using formations — proper, technical, layered formations. He’s cold, calculating, and extremely low-key. Doesn’t yell moves mid-fight, doesn’t broadcast his power, and when people die to his traps… they usually don’t even know how.

It's not flashy. It’s clean, smart, and surgical.

He starts weak (of course), but everything he learns is earned. No cheat systems. Just hard work, weird ancient diagrams, and a talent for seeing through the logic of complex spiritual arrays.

✦ What kind of cultivation novel is this?
  • Genre mix: Mostly dark, sometimes suspenseful. Political scheming shows up later. No slapstick, no fan service.
  • Pacing: Very slow-paced at the start, But it gets good later on.
  • Plot armor: Pretty minimal. The MC makes mistakes. He just adapts fast.
✦ Why I like it
  • The formations are more than just “bind the enemy for 3 seconds” nonsense. There’s actual theory and deduction behind them.
  • It respects your intelligence as a reader. Not overly verbose, not too purple-prose either.
✦ A few minor downsides:
  • Some early names/realms might be confusing until you get used to the terminology.
  • The beginning can feel slow if you’re used to fast-paced cultivation novels.
