Discussion Best Heroic Sacrifices in Fiction

    I've been fascinated with the whole 'Heroic Sacrifice' trope for awhile now. Sadly, it seems to me that it's being used less and less.
    ... that or the characters don't actually die.
    They're either saved last minute, brought back to life somehow (*stares incredulously at Dragon Ball Z*), or they die suddenly with little meaning.

    So I'm putting the question out there to get some more ideas.

    What are some of the best Heroic sacrifices you can think of?
    The story can be from this site, English novels, fanfiction, myths or legends. Anything.

    The character doesn't even really have to technically die. For example: The hero sealing themselves in a mcguffin to fight against the big bad for all eternity. They're not dead, but they might as well be.
