Please share your experiences about reading the mtl with me. I caught up to the latest translations, - 260ish, the Shaolin competition - and I can’t wait for more. I tried reading the mtl once, like around 100ish chapters, but thought I would rather wait for translations for more enjoyment. Now I can’t.

Could you guys enjoy it? Would you still read it and not wait for translations if you could choose? And which site has the best mtl?

Also are you reading SDO's TL? Mylasted is also TLing the series - he's up to like around ch 500for the patreon readers and around 440 for the free chaps.

Part of reading mtl is just accepting that somethings are just not going to make sense and that you're playing a game of fill in the blanks based on context. Also see the MTL glossaries in page 3 (scroll to the bottom) and page 4 (top of the page) of this thread put together by etherealmn and mylasted. Those are super helpful in surviving mtl. Altho it does get easier once you're used to it. My brain now auto converts most of mtl's strange terms.

Are proper TLs more enjoyable? - absolutely, but that requires patience. And who has that? Not me.
Do I regret reading MTL? NOPE! I need to know what happens next NOW.

So it's really up to you.
Any sane person would probably just wait for chapters to get a proper TL.
Any reasonably sane person would probably stick to the free and easy to access raw/mtl chaps available online.
I'm clearly neither, so some friends and i have been bending ourselves backwards to get the latest raws off naver to run through mtl ourselves.

first of all, my initial impression of MTL is "what in the actual hell is this". I went to the novel to read about the HwaJong Competition, but can't even find what chapter I should read to continue so I scrambled for a bit (lol). When I saw the MTL I was determined to quit after the competition ended but honestly I can't even remember what motive I had that day to continue reading (it's madness and desperation). The chapter count probably blinded me. And... after that the first arc after timeskip was a complete blur in some areas to me especially the quick-paced and intense action scenes. I got the rough idea of what happened, but my head will automatically skim-read that part so that's that. @MyLasted translation really enlightened me about that arc lmaoo. The match with Dang Gunnak was confusing too (why did they suddenly fight wait why is he treating him so nicely now what the hell okayy they're friends now got it), I got it just after rereading for the 2nd time. Back then I don't even know what Dangbo actually calls Cheongmyeong before I finished MTL (Dosa?? what's Dosa??? mistranslation?? did I skip something?? nvm just keep reading. Oooohh it is a nickname!! Cheongmyeong IS a Dosa!! so it's Dosa Hyeong-nim).

I can assure that it gets better the more you read though. Just like @ClearSongWillow said. You learned to navigate it overtime and your brain automatically comprehends it. Around 250 chapters should suffice I think........ By then you should be able to understand it perfectly.

I enjoy reading MTL tho. The story is still so funny even with it. Now especially I prefer to get the raw rather than the MTL provided online and then google translate it myself just because some translation site likes to cut off parts here and there (.....). If the translation doesn't make sense I could break the sentence word per word or do some light search for any idiom or metaphor. Also, proper translation sometimes uses terms that I don't like lmaooo. I still like reading them when I can't bother to do anything tho. But for any 1000+ chapters, it's not like you have any other choice other than MTL (unless you're willing to wait for like, 10 years BUT WHO HAS TIME FOR THAT WHEN THERE'S ALREADY THE NEXT CHAPTER IN FRONT OF YOU)

The MTL for every site is the same. Usually I read here just because I like the UI and it doesn't have ads. Personally, I recommend searching for raw and then google translate the page for reasons above.

 

They haven't yet since i didn't realise while setting up the account that I'll need to put my actual name on it and then when the verification didn't go through, i realised I'll need to make a new account and wait for a month to retry. Since each contact can only try registering once a month. So yea i 100% agree that they make registration sooo unnecessarily difficult for foreign users.

 

LMAO. I know someone who had to use another phone number to re-make a naver account with their actual name to get through the ID verification. Its's so annoying.

Just download the mobile webtoon/series apps and farm free cookies. They're surprisingly easy to get for free.

I also have an experience like this with mtl, but like a whole arc is completely blank for me. It’s Return of the Frozen Player, idk if you know about it, it’s not that popular (yet?). After that I swore I won’t read mtl because I want to enjoy it, but this one has such a wide popularity that it has to be better than that one.

And yes, I also was like, we are only at chapter 200-400, it already has 1400+ raws and counting, how many fre***g years will it take to finally read it? And I think I’m gonna take up that advice about getting the raws for mtling when I get there. Thanks!

The korean fandom put together some really well thought points that tie back to the older chaps. It's so good I tried my best editing the mtl to share with the rest of you. Misc TL/MTL/Fandom Jargon Notes that may be relevant before reading:
Hwagwi = Short form of the novel's full name Hwasan Gwihwan - fandom jargon

Guhwasan = old hwasan (100 years ago) - fandom jargon

Hyeonhwasan = new hwasan (now) - fandom jargon

Ogeom = 5 swords (originally the nickname for CM + the 4 original Hwasan students following CM but recently cuz CM has been standing out so much, CM is not included in it anymore and it refers to CM’s entire party instead - Baekcheon, Yu Iseol, Yoon Jong, Jo Geol, Dang Soso, Hyeyeon)

Jangmunin = Sect Leader (its a title. NOT a name. Official webtoon TL must’ve been drunk.)

Sahyungje = Sahyung & Saje in plural (includes both older and younger)

(매화검귀) Maehwa Geomgwi = CM's current nickname given to him by sapa.

(매화검존) Maehwa Geomjon = CM's old title from 100 years ago. Fan TLs will call it Plumblossom Swordsaint or a drunk webtoon TLer will call it Master of the Blossoming Blade but his full title "Maehwa Geomjon" is more accurately TLed as "Plumblossom Sword Supreme/Sovereign" I think Asura switched to using "Supreme" recently but i like Sovereign personally. It sounds cooler.

Geomgwi vs Geomjon - so the "jon" in CM's old title is a title of respect added to reflect someone being the absolute strongest in the field. So e.g. Dangbo's old title Amjon = the absolute strongest user of hidden weapons while CM's old title Geomjon = the absolute strongest sword user. I'm not an expert but from my understand "gwi" is also a sign of respect for CM's sword prowess but not as good as "jon". It's a subtle nuance utterly ruined by mtl however as both will just get MTLed to "swordsman".
