Like we are all used to blatant propaganda, patriotism, and racism in Chinese novels (heck a lot Korean ones are filled with it as well). They are annoying but what can you do? But in recent years, if you read an unli flow novel, the author would just blatantly censor anything gory or graphic. For example, in this new story I'm reading, the MC can't even see anything more graphic than blood. If something gory appears (like a mangled body or something) all the MC would see is a mosaic. The explanation is because the MC is still a minor and that's why what he can see is censored. Like this is so stupid and just lazy writing. I understand that China has restrictions regarding such genres but this is just ridiculous. Unlimited flow is all about horror, death, survival, mysteries, and problem solving. So how in the world can any minor (as in underage) character be able to survive for long if their senses are censored? They will miss important clues but MC has no problem because of plot armor of course. Never mind that people are dying left and right but god forbid a minor see anything graphic. Especially in these unli flow with live broadcast, the viewers are all clamoring for the deaths of the participants, heck they even bet on it, but what they see is censored too. A lot of unli flow novels have no problem bypassing such restrictions with vague but detailed descriptions but this new novel just takes the cake with the mosaic filter for minors crap. It just screams lazy writing to me.
Are there many novels about minors in the "unlimited flow"? Why are you reading them if you find this censorship uncomfortable?
Not really, the MC's are usually adults and there are side characters that are minors (they usually have cheats/powers to survive) but this novel just really makes me question the logic of the story. And I read a lot of unlimited flow novels because I love the survival/mystery/spooky genre.
You named this thread "Ridiculous censoring in Chinese webnovels (especially in the unlimited flow genre)", mentioned "recent years" and it's all about one novel? If you read many novels just drop this one and you'll forget about it in a week or two
Sheesh, I am just venting my annoyance with the censorship done on this genre. I only emphasized on this one novel because it's censorship style is just ridiculous, I already stated that the unli flow genre is filled with censorship, especially ones with live broadcast, those annoy me too but I am used to it. Do I have to list the names of the unli flow novels I've read to be acceptable in using the title I've used? A writer's gotta write what pays the bills after all and I understand that, I just wish they do it tastefully.
If it's just one novel, it has nothing to do with censorship. Your understanding of censorship is flawed.
People just don't really read my whole post huh, oh whatever. And what I mean about censorship or censorship style is the way the authors' restrict in writing more descriptions that are gory to not be flagged. Like using vague descriptions and such, not too excessive but has still enough info for the readers to understand. I just emphasized this one novel because I just find the way the author did it quite ridiculous. Okay, maybe I shouldn't have used the word censor?, my bad, English is my third language so I'm not really that fluent yet, especially with technical terms.
Indeed. These days people like to put label on everything without comprehending what are they speaking about So, are there many novels where gory or graphic content is censored? Since you said
A BL novel that is still not finished, google translated title is 'Am I just an ordinary person here?!' or 这里就我一个普通人吗?! Pretty much about how the MC is the most normal one out of the people he's met in the unlimited flow world. I actually like the way the author writes about the characters and the mysteries/instances/scenarios in the novel, it's just that stupid minor mosaic filter crap that irks me, the justification for it just doesn't really make sense, especially in a world filled with death.
The censorship you're talking about could be a veiled satire of the Chinese government's ridiculous levels of censorship.
There's actually just one rule. You're allowed to write anything you like. Just don't let too many people discover it. Once it creates enough influence. There will be a problem. If not enough influence, no one gives a damn.
