Does Yeon’s mother and father love each other? Did they had some interactions in the story?

A huge crowd gathered to witness the wedding. Even those who were not interested in the greats, but had heard of them at least once, came to attend the wedding, and the crowds that wanted to see the greats came again, so that no inn in the neighborhood, not even the inns in the neighboring villages, could find an empty room.

First, at the stroke of the hour, the bridegroom arrived at Baekri Sega.

The onlookers who came to watch the wedding were busy admiring the dapper groom in his wedding attire, riding a white horse.

It was customary for the groom to pass through three gates before meeting his bride, usually performed by close relatives.

The first was the Baekri Myung, which required a difficult sword dance, and the groom executed it perfectly without a single mistake.

    The second was Baekri Ri.

She required the groom to demonstrate his bow skills, sending a small paper bird flying for him to catch with just one foot.

A man from the Baekri Ri family handed the groom a bow and arrow, and Ji Jin, the youngest disciple of the White Sword Master, accepted the paper bird.

When the onlookers saw the paper bird, they suddenly began to chatter

    "No, that's too small."

"Can you see it? I don't have good eyesight, so I can't even see it."

Since it was a wedding, the paper birds were very colorful, and it was expected that they would stand out.

On cue, Jinjin released the paper bird with all his heart.

The golden paper bird glided through the air, bathed in sunlight, but the three long tail feathers of the wedding bird created a wave pattern in the air.

At a moment when people forgot to breathe, an arrow pierced the paper bird with a pucker.

The paper bird burst open, the red bird and gold leaf inside fluttering like flower petals. People cheered and scrambled to pick up the gold leaf as it fell to the ground.

Finally, Seo Ha-ryung, who had been invited as a close friend, stepped forward to dance with the groom.

It was considered inauspicious to show blood on an auspicious day and considered incompetent. It was a difficult dance that required the groom to win without hurting either his opponent or himself.

After more than thirty fights, the groom won, and the people cheered.

The atmosphere was like a festival, but the bride's people were in a different mood.

Baekri Pae Hyeok, the head of the Baekri family, was not looking at her granddaughter and son-in-law, but at an enemy who had come to steal. His glare was so fierce that his legs trembled, even if it was unattended.

Baekri Uigang next to him was no different. The atmosphere was so frightening that I thought it was a funeral, not a wedding.

However, the groom, Namgung Ryu-cheong, did not lose his gentle smile under the fierce gaze.

If he was a little nervous, it was only due to the nervousness of the new groom, not the stares he was receiving. The people admired his boldness and recognized that he was indeed a member of the Namgung family, and the corner of Bai Li Feiqing's mouth twitched in dissatisfaction.

When the bride, dressed in a colorful wedding gown and a head covering, entered the room, the mood relaxed.

Together, the bride and groom bowed to Baekri Pae Hyeok first.

Baekri Pae Hyeok relaxed his expression and looked at them with a benevolent expression.

"Congratulations on your relationship. In the future, you should honor, cherish, and respect each other. You must act with discretion, prosper your offspring, and set an example. Be truthful, without deceit, and have a harmonious home."

After a pause, Baekri Pae Hyeok spoke again.

"Don't forget that I'm always behind you."

Baekri Yeon bit her lips tightly.

If she opened her mouth, she would burst into tears, so she nodded.

Next, it was Baekri Uigang's turn.

Bai Ligang's face was stiff as he bowed. I couldn't tell from her expression whether she was getting married or attending someone's funeral.

After being bowed, Bai Uigang did not open his mouth for a long time, only after half a stick of incense had been burned.

    His words were very short.

"You should------ to the Hundred Years' Sea."

Baekri Yeon knew that this was his father's own wish.

At that moment, Baekri Uigang hand tightly grasped Baekri Yeon's hand.

His palms were like rocks, full of hard calluses.

It was the hand that had held her through the night when she couldn't fall asleep after falling in love with the coin horse.

It was the hand that held her every day, woke her up, taught her everything from how to hold a brush to how to hold a sword, and spent countless hours with her.

The tip of my nose turned sour as I felt a tug at my heart. The tears I'd been holding back burst forth in a flood of sorrow. Hot, scalding tears trickled down the backs of our clasped hands.

When half a stick of incense had burned, the grip loosened.

Bai Ligang looked at her and spoke in a soft voice.

    "You should be happy."

    "Worry------."

Don't worry, your father should be healthy. I will come to see you often, I will miss you.

A million things came to mind, but all that came out was a thin word.

    "Okay."

On the way back, her father, her aunts, uncles, and other relatives who had come to celebrate the wedding offered their best wishes.

Before long, the red cloth aisle ended and the groom helped the bride into the flower chariot.

Following the officiant's lead, the float began to move, and the bride and groom drove away to the sound of firecrackers.

Thanks for sharing this. It made me smile because I have seen this kind of ceremony in Chinese historical stories. Since these are martial arts clan, the three type of tests the groom had to take are befitting. For other weddings in a different kind of Chinese historical story, I have seen the groom tested with poetry and riddles. No matter the difference, it’s fun to read or watch the tests the family put the groom through and the atmosphere is almost always festive as the other wedding guests cheer on the groom or family.

Wow. The Namgoong gramps is really shitty. He reminds me of those obnoxious power-mad old men in shounen fantasy stories who only throw their weight around and abuse their power. Yeon is really smart and handles the situation rationally. But damn if I don't wanna smack the old man into next year. Threatening kids and snatching their treasures because he can. No matter what he might teach her and Ya-Yool later, he's already shit in my books.

From what I've gathered, her father didn't die. He's even present at the FL and ML's wedding as spoiled above.

Also, I've read others' comments about her father being too much of a pacifist. Tbh, I'd still pick him over the other novel fathers who abused - worse killed - their own daughters in their first TL. At most, he sincerely loves his daughter and tries to do his best for her and at the very least, I'd pick a father with principles than a blatant schmuck. Hell, I'd pick him a thousand times over mine :blobjoy::bloborz:

It's not like they were close in their past life. They were complete strangers. It was nothing personal. And Ya Yool was also a victim of the real villains

Okay but still like you can't marry the person who killed you in past life hypotheticaly I mean she should have more self worth it's like going back to a person who abused you and hurt ( even if he didn't really have a close relationship with you) going back with him someone who hurt you just because he changed is devastating because the memories you would have to carry all your life as well as this feeling of when the other shoe gonna drop (goes back to how he was/hurt someone else) to me its triggering and not worth it I like the ml so far seems like green flag

Aaah sorry I said I would post this and then had one of those instances where everything I typed went poof (and I…talk a lot) so it’s taken me awhile to get back to this. But! Late, but as promised, childhood moments between Yeon & Yayul (I will maybe do Yeon/Ryucheong later)

As a note, they’re all kids, so these aren’t necessarily romantic moments, just moments that seemed notable to me.

    Yayul & Yeon childhood moments

Y’all, Yayul is so much like a stray cat I can’t even. In most scenes, he’s usually just quietly observing, and when he does talk, it’s usually when he and Yeon are alone (the exception, possibly amusingly, is to snark at Ryucheong). His tendency to come across as disengaged makes when he does engage all the more startling when it happens, because it’s usually swift, decisive, and somewhat extreme, especially in contrast to other kids like Seo Ha-ryeong, who is probably the most ‘normal’ of the kids.

Their dynamic hurts my heart a little bit. Yayul is clearly attached to (read: to an unhealthy degree imo) and protective of Yeon, but Yeon, for her part, is clearly still a little scared of him, though she’s consciously trying to overcome her fear and separate the adult Yayul who killed her in a past life from the traumatized kid who hasn’t hurt her in this life - and Yayul has caught onto her discomfort, which makes me so sad.

    General observations
    • Yayul sort of self-appoints himself as a servant/bodyguard to Yeon - multiple people mistake him for her servant, and Yayul never corrects them (Yeon does, though), but he does things like manage her medicine, shoo away visitors while she’s sleeping, and attack anyone he sees as a threat to her…

    • He takes little to no action to defend himself, but takes swift and often brutal action in Yeon’s defense.

    • Things Yayul only does with Yeon:
      • Express concern for her wellbeing (eg, checking she took her medicine, asking if she has a headache) notable mostly in contrast to say, how he completely ignores Seo Ha-ryeong’s bruised wrist (...which he bruised) until Yeon tells him to help her.

      • Initiate conversation. Literally the only time he talks to other people first is to tell them to go away, but he actually chats with/asks Yeon questions.

      • Respond in conversations with more than two words: He’s often completely silent during scenes with others present, even when the events directly affect him (for example, pretty much all of Cheonsan’s appearances. The first one he doesn’t say a single word, later he says I think two sentences) and if he does speak, it’s only when directly addressed for an answer and a few words at most. But if it’s Yeon asking, or if it’s just them, he actually responds in full sentences or even initiates. It’s subtle, but once you notice it, it’s really apparent. (...also sometimes when he clearly doesn’t want to answer he will ignore Yeon too, so it’s not like he becomes a chatterbox, he’s just…a lot more likely to talk).

      • Smile. He’s often described as having a blank/neutral expression (the reason given for the bully’s hitting him and starting a fight is that they were annoyed his expression didn’t change when they were clearly trying to rile him up) but he frequently smiles when Yeon appears.
The little signs that speak to the kid’s abuse and trauma though…

    • He is quick to pick up on when he’s angered Yeon and also quick to apologize…but there are definitely signs he doesn’t actually know what he’s done wrong or should be apologizing for, and that he’s sincere because he doesn’t want to upset her more than anything.

    • He definitely displays an overattachment to Yeon (ex: staying in place without eating dinner waiting for her to return)

    • He displays almost complete indifference to his own life multiple times.

    • Finally, he’s pretty dang perceptive about some things - we’re told explicitly he catches on that certain aspects of their living arrangements at the Namgung residence are actually to minimize contact between him and Namgung clan members to keep his secret, he’s aware Yeon is a bit afraid of him) but absolutely no understanding of other things (why Yeon is distressed he doesn’t value his life, why he shouldn’t break Seo Ha-ryeong’s wrist, etc.)

    • Honestly, the only time we see Yayul actually acting like a kid his age, IMO, is when he and Ryucheong are snarling at each other.

Okay! Enough rambling. These two have several moments if you're looking for them (I'm a sucker for a second lead, sigh) idk if they're all exactly sweet persay, but a few that I remember:

Okay, so, speed recap up until chap 60ish:
    • Euigang takes Yayul, the only survivor of a kidnapping incident, despite knowing Yayul has been (presumably) forced to learn the forbidden demonic arts, because he blames himself (kidnapper was an old enemy Euigang believed was dead).
    • Yeon sees him using his demonic arts and scolds him
    • Yeon pushes Yayul out of the way of a landslide (getting swept away herself)
    • Yayul is the one who finds her and carries her back after she finally gets out, and is determined to stay with her
    • Yayul and Yeon stay together at the Namgung residence while waiting for her father to join them, where everyone assumes he is her servant (he stays in their guest area to avoid attention, because they really hate demonic arts users) and he breaks Seo Ha-ryeong's wrist when she sneaks in to get a peek at the visitors.

    The hug!
    • Yeon gives up her second vial of gongqing oil (azure elixir in official adaptation) to buy Yayul some protection (though technically she does it for her father who would be in trouble for harboring Yayul rather than strictly for Yayul himself)

    • Yayul protests, and she (attempting to lighten things up) tells him “Now you can't say your life is worthless. It's a life that’s been paid for with the gongqing oil."

    • He responds with his typical “.......” but then straight up hugs her T.T an action which completely bewilders Yeon.
      • Slightly funny note - 야율 (Yayul) sometimes gets MTL’d as ‘Nightfall’ or ‘Nightmare’ (야 starts a lot of ‘night’ words) so, depending, you end up with what I guess are puns, in a way? “And at that moment, a nightmare (/Yayul) engulfed me. Or more accurately, he hugged me…”
    Abandoned puppy
    • In one way he’s more like a puppy than a cat - he positively wilts when Yeon leaves (he typically stays behind to minimize contact w/ members of the Namgung clan, lest they figure out his secret)

    • He skips dinner waiting for Yeon to come back after the Namgung family head asks for her, because he was worried something would happen, and later, when she goes somewhere she notes he looks lonely and forlorn waiting for her, and feels uneasy about how close to confinement the life he’s living at the Namgung residence is.

    • T.T More than once she comes back and finds him waiting pretty much where she left him. He openly admits he worries about her, and she makes sure he gets fed (because he obviously doesn't eat if he doesn't move from his spot)
    Taking care of Yeon
    • He’s very quick to note details about Yeon’s health (there’s a scene where the sunlight hurts her eyes and he catches on immediately she has a headache, and several where he brings her medicine).

    • He held her injured hand for an entire day while she slept (to keep her from moving it and injuring it more). He then stays up all night for several nights (along with Shibi, who is the servant Yeon protected) to do this while she heals, which is what ultimately drives her to accept Ryucheong’s offer of help - she’s worried Yayul isn’t getting any rest, so if Ryucheong helps during the day, Shibi and Yayul can rest.
      • Yayul notes that she doesn’t sleep well / has nightmares (again with the double meaning?) which, if you’ve read other spoilers, will come up again between them in much later chapters.
    • When Yeon declines Ryucheong’s help, Yayul silently provokes him as he’s leaving (in a like, ‘hah, I’m her friend so I get to help but you’re not’ kind of way) and Yeon notes his smile is exactly the same as when he killed her in her past life, which disturbs her for a second before she notes she’s really not that scared of it anymore.

    • When Yeon asks for his help to write a letter and realizes he doesn’t know how, she starts to teach him how to read.

    • After Yeon tells him not to hurt Seo Ha-ryeung’s hands because she’s learning the sword, he holds back the second time she sneaks in, but still snarls at her to go away, because Yeon is still sleeping. Later, he gets a basin and treats her wrist at Yeon’s request, but once again says nothing the entire scene until Seo Ha-ryeung asks if saw Yeon’s eyes turn gold - which he denies flatly.

    • He doesn’t hesitate to lie for her (ex, saying Seo Ha-ryeung is crazy when she exclaims Yeon’s eyes turned gold) or to assume whoever has a problem with her is the one who is wrong.

    Offer of discipleship
    • Yeon kind of dozes with her head on Yayul's shoulder when Cheonsan Yeomje does his point and shout of 'Give that child to me'. (which leads to brief confusion until he clarifies which child he means) but the mental image is adorable.

    • Yayul is by all appearances completely ambivalent about his fate as laid out by the elder - he doesn't really seem to care if he lives or dies and is pretty much 'shrug emoji'.

    • The first reaction out of him in that entire scene is when Yeon, realizing he doesn’t seem to value his life, shouts at him, and he smiles, happy that she cares. Which is sweet but also really messed up when you consider he’s like, 7? Euigang says he’s the same age as Yeon.

    • He likewise explicitly lays out the reason he doesn’t want to train as a disciple is because ‘he likes it here’ (aka, he likes being by Yeon’s side).
    Protecting Yeon during the fight
    • Yeon notes that one of the insidious aspects of the qi absorption is that it’s one that you’ll use unconsciously, especially if you lose control of your emotions (and then the more you use it, the more natural it becomes), and notes that Yayul has pretty solid self-control of his temper. During the dumpling line incident, he actually remained pretty chill despite being harassed by the bullies (this is in fact what led him to get hit in the face - they were pissed his expression didn’t change). In fact, when Yeon asks him why later, it’s revealed the only reason he lost his temper was because Yeon got hit.
Parallels with Yeon’s life, “Don’t abandon me”
    • In a scene that honestly and completely broke my heart, he bows his head and quietly asks her not to abandon him.

    • Yeon, who had been planning to do exactly that (via telling her dad about what happened, who would have then ensured Yayul go with elder as his disciple) realizes that:
      • a) Yayul is still a child

      • b) He’s intuitive enough to know what she was feeling/planning, and

      • c) That he is, in that moment, exactly like how she was in her past life - out of place, unwanted, despised for something beyond his control, and just wanting the people who mattered most to accept him.
    • Yeon completely changes her tune, and promises to not pressure him into going with the elder anymore, swearing that she will become strong enough to protect herself so Yayul won’t have to use his technique to protect her.

    • She also says the world is big, they will find another way to manage his condition.

    • Ironically (?) her resolve triggers Yayul, and Yeon finds out the next day from the elder that he went to him and accepted becoming his disciple - but with conditions, which elder doesn’t reveal to Yeon. Heavily implied that Yayul realized if he kept using the absorption, he would keep scaring Yeon, but without it, he had no way to protect her.
And that’s as far as I’ve gotten! But I’m pretty sure he’s pulling the ‘disappear for five years without a word to the heroine so he can become strong enough to protect her’ trope.

Side note - Yayul & Ryucheong

These two take like five seconds to decide they are not each other’s biggest fan and start bristling at one another. Honestly about the only time we see Yayul actually acting like a kid his age, IMO, is when he and Ryucheong are hissing at each other.
