Discussing methods to eat fruits is an yearly tradition I have been needlessly following since 2021. Members of the Parliament, jackfruit is our chosen fruit this year! Tamil literature says that the ones who have mango, banana and jackfruit trees are beyond wealthy. And rightfully so, they all taste holy. Jackfruit can be cooked in many ways. Until recently, I only knew of this way, where it's mashed and steamed after being wrapped in bay leaves. This is called kumbilappam, and it's my favorite. No one in my family is fond of this, so that's a great plus. (Tho, the downside is going down with a stomach ache, apparently. Not like that can stop me.) This is chakka varatti and it's just jackfruit jam/preserve. I love this too. (and no one else likes it; no competition!) Apparently, jam is just a way to preserve fruits. (I never knew this. And since I learned about this, I have always been shocked.) In a way, it's just fruit pickle. Can you believe pickling a fruit?! (We thank the superior state of Kerala for all these fine inventions.) The jackfruit seeds are very delicious when fried or in kolumbu! Even though these taste good, eating jackfruit raw is still special. Have you eaten jackfruit? How do you enjoy it in your culture? Let's share recipes~
ate it lots, well not lots but good enough times there's a dish called turon, where banana is wrapped in some tortilla and friend, sometimes you can add jackfruit. There's also a dish where you can put jackfruit in coconut milk and eat it with rice
So in our Bengali cuisine we use unripe jackfruit to make curry with taste exactly like meat it's so tasty Then it's also used to make pickles.. The ripe jackfruit is so tasty we have around 3-4 jackfruit trees so never buy jackfruit and they taste awesome.. And jackfruit seeds they are the best part of jackfruit be it a curry with them and dry fish or jackfruit seeds stir fry or mix veg curry with jackfruit they are so tasty And in Bengali we call it echor or kathal
Jackfruit, eh? If it's ripe, then just eat the fruit The seeds, in some area they're boiled & served as snack called "beton nangka" (nangka = jackfruit in INA) In Central Java & Jogjakarta, young jackfruit are cooked into a dish called "gudeg" & served w/ rice & choices of boiled egg, chicken, krecek (a spicy stew made from/with cow skin), tempe bacem and/or tofu bacem
First time I’ve heard of it! When the thread started, I thought you were talking about a fictional fruit.
Ah! I just remembered we also cook unripe/young jackfruit in kolumbu/curry and that's working my appetite. It's tastes so good! Rich person. XD You have jackfruit trees! Have you eaten durian? They look similar. I don't know about the similarities in taste. I am yet to try durian.
In Andhra cuisine,we use jack fruit leaves as a cushion for one kind of idli. And seeds could be boiled and cooked as curry too!
woahhh i didn't know jackfruit jam was a thing!!! jackfruit is my favorite fruit i usually just eat mine as fruit haha, and sometimes if i have a lot i'll dry it into jackfruit chips!!
I bought some because I was so curious after reading about it in so many novels. It was hella expensive and not tasty at all... I generally have good fortitude with new foods but this one almost made me puke. The texture was special, mushy kinda like banana but with a more spongey feeling, but too stringy to my taste. The taste was like banana and a hint of very ripe mango. A pity I don't like banana. My nose is bad but my mom's is extraordinary, so by far the worst mistake I made was bringing it home. She wasn't a fan of the smell and how it came through the garbage bag... I've never tried jackfruit but it's on my list! It looks delish, like mango
Here are anothers that I've found/just remembered: - sayur nangka: young jackfruit & coconut milk, cooked into spicy stew. Usually found in Padang/Minang restaurants - nangka goreng (fried jackfruit/jackfruit freeter). Chopped ripe jackfruit, dipped in batter of flour then deep fried in hot oil. It's a local street food that sold on certain area in Bandung, West Java
The jam is made with jaggery. It's nice, but it also has a strong taste because of the jaggery. And I completely forgot about the chips! They taste so good. Jackfruit is, thankfully, very sweet and not stinky. So you will most likely enjoy it~ These look so delicious. And I definitely need to try that stew. Jackfruit is so versatile! I am so excited seeing all these recipes~ XD
I feel like just munching on them is the lazy but superior way to eat it, it tastes so good the smooth bite you get is amazing
