    First scene I thought of was from Tate no Yuusha.
    When Atla decides to tank the special attack from one of the phoenix birds to prevent the entire army from being destroyed, and Naofumi could only stand there and watch.

    Touma Kamijou at the end of OT (by far my favorite)

    Nathaniel at the end of Ptolemy's gate from the Bartimaeus trilogy

    Bravely Default has a really good one. Not going to spoil it though.

    Coiling Dragon has a classic one

    Shanks in One Piece

    Naruto's parents in Naruto (also Gaara)

    Boku no hero academia ... not spoiling anything.

    There are many many others.

    Right. Gankutsuou... (arguably) and Ze Tian Ji... and sigh... Dragon Quest 5... :(
