From what I remember the grandpa treasured his daughter and was confused as to why she married the Duke and was kind of appalled that there was no "affection" amongst the family, especially the oldest son and his mother. It was only after Lulu is in the picture and they spend time together that he understands the sons and the Duke aren't the most outwardly affectionate
